Three Ways to Improve the Sound of Your Guitar

Three Ways to Improve the Sound of Your Guitar

My name is Alexander Pashentsev, and I’m a master luthier specializing in classical guitars with over 20 years of experience. Throughout my career, I’ve mastered all the subtleties that contribute to an instrument’s truly perfect sound. Today, I’d like to share with you some simple yet effective ways you can enhance your guitar’s tone and unlock its full potential.

1. Nails

Musicians who visit my workshop know how important it is to properly file your nails before playing. This detail may seem minor, but it significantly influences the guitar’s sound. The right shape and length of your nails allow for a cleaner, deeper, and more expressive tone. If you truly want your instrument to reveal its potential, pay attention to this!

2. Quality Strings

To make your guitar sound brighter and louder, aim to change the strings at least every two months. And don’t skimp on this essential accessory. It’s better to install high-quality carbon strings on your classical guitar—personally, I use Knobloch carbon strings with strong tension on my luthier instruments. Purchase premium strings, and your ears will be pleasantly surprised.

3. Proper Guitar Storage

For classical guitars, avoid transporting the instrument as much as possible. They are highly sensitive to even slight temperature changes, which directly affects the sound. The only exception is using a professional case that preserves a stable temperature environment. Even then, it’s best to minimize movement. Also, protect your instrument from drying out—especially during the fall and winter when humidity drops significantly. Use humidifiers, as they positively impact the sound of your guitar.

I’m confident that even applying just one of these tips will noticeably transform your guitar’s sound, making it deeper and more expressive.

In my guitar workshop, I always pay attention to every detail, because a professional classical guitar is a blend of craftsmanship, precision, and a thoughtful approach. If you dream of your instrument sounding perfect, a meticulous approach is the first step toward achieving that.
